Well I just returned from SE Asia/New Zealand. 16 months away and I'm ready to play ns or l4d when I get a better computer. I built my computer back in 2002, so uh yeah.

Well, today I played L4D on-line for the first time since I bought it (over a month ago now).
I played for about 20 seconds, then got votekicked.
Near as I could tell, three folks were playing on one of the Jiggly servers, and I guess they were all on vent. One of them died (from being stupidly miles away from everyone else) - and then they kicked me so he could play again.
I suppose I coulda been nasty about it, if I remembered the rcons for the L4D rooms.
*sigh* F*ck that game...

*sigh* Waste of money then. My Steam Community thingie doesn't work, which makes it neigh impossible to get together with the few steam-equipped RL friends I have.
Stupid lack of proper server browser.

But without Steam community, or a proper server browser, I can't find you. Kinda restricted to RL friends, or at least IM aquaints - ones that know how to use console to give me the IP of their server at that. *sigh*

Most of us are in the JP steam group. The only real effective way to play with people is to have them on your actual friends list. Then they show up as "Currently playing" and their games show up in the play with friends lists.
Labalicious and I play a fair amount on weekends.

Steam. Community. No. Workie.
This means I cannot add/monitor/see Steam friends.
Seems to happen to a lot of folks who joined Steam with use of an HL1 key. I somehow don't think I'm going to purchase L4D on yet another account to get around this BS though. :\

So, fix it. It has to be working on the deep internals, because valve will not let you play games online without connectivity to the community servers. My roommate just re-formated his machine because he would get dropped from DoW2 games because steam would lose it's happy place.
Otherwise there is a way to bring up the server browser with console.

Yes, but even with the server browser, it would be pretty hard to coordinate a game with the rest of the Jiggly group. He'd have to communicate to one of them to leave a slot open in the game via instant messenger, find the server they're lobby picks, and then attempt to connect before said open slot gets filled, and that's just getting to be too much work to play a game.
I agree though, you should attempt to get your steam community working. It's a pretty handy tool for coordinating games. The days of randomly joining a server just to see who's playing are gone. They died with WON.

Lies. Steam Authentication and Steam Community are very different things. This is actually a very common problem (there are articles in the Steam FAQ's). The long and the short of it is, your account is corrupted, and you can't fix it without getting another account. Until now, the biggest problem with it is that I've had to manually set my name in all official Steam mods and TF2, via the setinfo command, and, in some mods, I've had to do this every map change (cuz it doesn't stick in the userconfig.cfg / gets overriden by the broken Community on map start, leaving me with either "[Unknown]" or "__" for a name).
Jeeze, I seem to recall for doing it for four or five years under bloody Steam.
It's just L4D, all the other games still have decent server browsers. Until L4D gets one, f*ck it - back to ZPS.

DITTO DITTO! I miss WON... I miss randomly joining servers and killing everyone inside... I REALLY miss Jigglypuff's THIRD Jigglyroom! It's where I met the girl who took my innocence. (No lie)

I say its time to modernize. Will they allow you to move all your products to a new account that's not corrupted? It seems to me like since its a problem with their software... they should.

Sadly no. There's no way to transfer purchased games between accounts - unless you have duplicates of the same game on the account, in which case you can "gift" the extras.
And I'm not "modernizing" for one broken game. 'specially one that's yet to impress me.
Aside from L4D, I've never had anymore trouble hunting for games with Steam's server browser than I did with WON's, so I'm not sure what yer all on about anyways. Steam Community is much younger than Steam itself - it's only been around since TF2's release. We were plagued with Steam well before then.
