Dude Black Lagoon is *ruthless*.
Thoth your recommendations are superb, but I somehow feel like my sense of morals has been tainted watching these.

I'm surprised no one recommended Gurren Lagann.

Man.
I just finished watching Black Lagoon.
Ruthless, and sad, and confusing.
I'm left feeling kinda disenchanted with society

Huh. I watched a youtube trailer on my phone just now, and while it was really shitty quality and I could barely hear it, it looked interesting. I'm just afraid it will turn into anime power rangers. :/

No its short, 2 seasons 27 episodes. It's by Studio Gainax, the same guys who did Neon Genesis Evangelion and FLCL.
The story is alot deeper than it first appears, in fact it gets exponentially deeper as you get further into it. The tongue and cheek dialogue is great, excellent animation, satisfying plot, minimal filler, probably one of the best ending sequences in any mecha anime to date, and just overall a very satisfying anime.

Correction: The best ending sequence to any anime, ever.

To quote Kathy Griffin, "Holy f*ckballs! Baccano's on Hulu!"

There's so much depth and emotion in anime, it's really too bad that it has such a horrible stigma.
Gurren Laagan started out pretty rocky, but ended amazingly. Scouts was right, the best ending sequence of any anime, ever.

Hey! I just work here...
I never thought much of the show... Seemed just kind of a fun bit of satire with no real substance. I never got past episode seven or so though.
I think you can watch it legally here (or at least, there's ads):
