So, I'm back. My system was down for a long time because the parts I needed / had were really incompatible. I decided to buy one of those Killer NICs because I saw a video of it fixing MMO "run lag" whereby someone is running with you to some other place and they appear 10 steps behind you. With a Killer NIC, they appear right next to you, because there is no processing delay. Long story short, the end result was that the card doesn't support XP 64. I got really angry, and sent this email to support@bigfootnetworks.com:

Not surprised, seeing as XP is past end of life. Time to upgrade to Win7. |

Microsoft pays folks to make their hardware non-XP compatible (exclusively Vista or 7 compatible). Sony offers massive discounts on their hardware components that deliberately lack XP drivers, as the media protection layer in Vista/7 protects the other aspects of their media industry. Additionally, Sony pays for most of Microsoft's Vista/7 advertising. Several other media companies take similar actions to support Vista/7 for the same reasons (and they don't have the whole PS3/XBox conflict). As a result, this is pretty typical. It's only mitigated by the fact that said hardware manufacturers have to take into account that XP is still, by far and away, the most widely used Windows operating system out there, so they can only take advantage of these kickbacks and discounts when they have a dedicated reseller willing to use their components. For the most part these are components in pre-built machines, such as Gateway's/eMachine's, HP's, Compaq's, Dell's, and the like, but that's slowly changing. It's much easier, and thus cheaper, to make drivers for XP systems, but the amount of money M$ and the RIAA companies are willing to put into the system for their own ends to counter that fact is staggering. _________________ "After oil, diamonds, military contractors, and pharmaceuticals, the computer/IT industry is the most corrupt in the world." - Melinda Gates Thothie |

No offense, but that card looks like a total scam. Not quiet sure how something like that would help reduce latency on any level. Your biggest points of contention are going to be the peering points encountered throughout the 'net. Even if it magically did work somehow, you're only talking about nanoseconds across the local bus versus milliseconds everywhere else. Even enterprise level NICs with hardware based TOE processing engines aren't designed to reduce overall response latency. No matter what, you're going to be limited by the lowest common denominator (highest latency peer) at any given point and this is usually always outside of your machine. If you're still hellbent on using the card, I'd say find a student and get Win7/pro - it's only $29. (Google: windows 7 student) |

Ironically I ended up using the Windows 7 OS I bought for my mom's computer that I built her for christmas. She hated it, so I put XP back on there for her and she's been happier ever since, lol. The main reason for my purchase was lifting the load of network data transfer off the processor. I've been on this kick of using hardware components to supplement the main processor for some reason. All in all, it's made pretty much 0 difference. I'm pretty sure you could pull the thing out of my machine and have me use an onboard NIC and I'd have no idea. Interesting getting everything working properly though. |

Wondering if you could modify / force XP to use the drivers of W7 somehow. |
