When I try to start hlds.exe on its own, it gives me an error saying that:
Code:
hlds.exe could not start because it could not locate steam.dll


To remedy this I attempted to replace hlds.exe with
Code:
steam.exe -applaunch 5 %c

Where %c are the command line arguments, however that seems to fail as well and just ends up opening many instances of the hlds.exe launcher for steam.

Spent some more time on this, found some excellent resources over at the valve developer community, however its still not working.

I'm pretty sure I am doing something wrong. I thought you were supposed to be able to launch HLDS in -console mode though...

Yer using the REAL HLDS.exe - with like a DOS console window - and not that crap steam-skinned GUI HLDS they supply, yes? This a winderz or linux server? (NS seems to like Winderz better.)

Easy way (windows):
Download:
http://www.thothie.com/ms/hldsupdatetool.zip

make a folder called c:\hlds
drop contents of above zip archive into said.

Press Windows+R, and paste this code into the Open blank:
Code:
C:\HLDS\HldsUpdateTool -dir "." -command update -verify all -game valve


This will download the uncompressed version of Half-Life you need to host a true dedicated server, and make sure you have every file you need. (Takes a bit)

Then drop your NS server folder in there. Folder structure should look something like:

Except, where you see "MSC" you'll see "NS".

And in that case, to use the batch file I posted on the previous page, you'd want to dump it into the c:\hlds folder as well.

Ah I see, so you have to use the hlds update tool in order to host a true not-through-steam dedicated server.

I'll get to it.

Thats very convenient, it just dropped all the dedicated server files right into that directory.

Its on Windows Server 2003
And no, I was using steam-skinned shitty-ness ;__;

Everything is up and seems to be running alright, with the exception of a map rotation.

That's where you are mistaken. With out own server, we can get more followers. And think about when the server is full, those extra OAs have to go somewhere.


And Wormbo, I believe he is talking about the /stuck strength.
