Corrupt Registry

Blarg... I just today found out my new drive imaging software is not compatible with my SATA2 RAID BIOS. It kindly uninstalled itself as a result - sadly the way it decided to uninstall itself was to restore the image it made during its initial install (even though its incompatible with the bios). Thus, instantly corrupt main hard drive.

I *think* however it just corrupted the critical system areas. It looks as though the file system is intact, and its just the registry and such that is fubar. Sadly, its fubar enough that I can't use system restore apparently (and my fear is, the drive imager disabled the system restore).

At the moment, I’m fiddling with the recovery console to see if I can manually restore from one of the old system info volumes. I don’t expect anyone to come up with any better ideas before I get done with that, but I’ve nothing better to do while I wait for this to do all its little checks, so I thought I’d ask.

Have you got a backup of the previous registry values?

Doubt it - that's what the drive imaging was for! >< I might have some in the system info volumes, but I'm waiting on a thorough chkdsk to complete itself before I try to manually fish them out of there. (Takes awhile, damn half terrabyte drive and it's almost full.)

At least the other three drives seem untouched. I have another XP boot, and a Vista boot - probably easier to use one of them to fish out the files I need than the recovery console, but meh, so long as I'm here...

Yup, I think I'm just fuxed.

This disk imager has been handling the registry archives since Febuary (ie. system restore has been disabled all that time). Needless to say, system settings that old are more or less totally invalid, so I've gotta reinstall from scratch.

Mental note: Before installing a ghoster - do an image restore before you actually need it to in order to make sure it actually works. ><

The good news is, it does look like it left the rest of the files intact, just not the Windows system files. *sigh* Does mean reinstalling Windows and all my other software though. Should give me a downtime of a week or two.
