Meh, wish I could help. Currently I'm dealing with ELS Netware 286 (read: 1990 netware), in order to get this old lady's "network of the ancients" back on-line. She's a real genius with this ancient DOS-based Aerus inventory software that requires Novell's sharing semantics to function, which requires ancient hardware I've been hunting down, and she's too old to learn windows now, it seems. She's also the one with all the money, and two of my friends work for her - so if she gives up and leaves, the company goes with her (she does this because she wants to, not because she has to). So, if I can't get it to work, since there's no one else who will touch it, my friends will lose their jobs! :|

[/offtopic] Seriously though, unless you are doing something that requires serious security, I'd just go with the standard windows network. Especially if you are going to be using Windows computers anyways - as then, even if your network security is good, your OS security wont be, which makes the effort largely pointless. (And it will double the effort required to keep things behaving).

Pretell what ancient hardware you are looking for? I might be able to help with that seeing as how i have old P2 and P3 intel cpus with an old MB as well as some things here and there that i have laying around in a box of old technology. Anyway yeah I looked more into it seeing as how the kiddies seemed to have taken over the jiggly forums as of late, Working overtime to get the time I need to research these things and three monster drinks and 2 boones farm drinks later and I find my answer.

For future reference in case someone else has this predicament I would suggest you stick with a windows based OS server if you are using quickbooks. Quickbooks tends to hate everything else except windows based servers. Quickbooks used to allow you to install it in any Server OS but that changed after 2005 i believe then it was done so that only windows was the accepted OS. Ah well atleast I wont have to learn too much more just brush up on my networking skills for the install.

Lolz, sadly Pentium is light years beyond this. This stuff won't run on anything higher than a 486 - and some of the 486's seem to have issues with it too (DX and up). It also seems to be picky about controller card and IRQ configurations there of, which is causing me headaches. Sometimes kicking the machine seems to help though. (At least, it helps the headaches.)

One of the harder bits to find I need are ISA Coaxial Arcnet network cards like so:

Configing these is insane. Sadly both the hardware and the software is from the era that they made things deliberately overly complicated in hopes that you would be forced to hire a full time tech from their company - this is pre-internet bubble, before they realized that strategy wasn't cost effective due to the size of the skilled workforce it entailed. (These days the thinking is: large skilled workforce = bad, so they try to make things simple enough to troubleshoot overseas.)

Where've you been that you are just now noticing this - in Mexico with Lurt? ;)

Not coax persay, more like thinnet.

So toth, I take it these things are on either a bus or ring network.

EDIT: Nevermind, I see terminating connectors in your parts image, must be a bus.

There is no token in bus networks.

No, not w/e.

Put a vampire tap on a thinnet cable and you get two thinnet cables!
