if it wasn't intended to be a sentence, you shouldn't have ended it in a period. the sole function of a period is to end a sentence, and it is actually the defining characteristic of determining if a string of words is attempting to be a sentence or not.
so you are guilty not of putting a period where it doesn't belong, but of constructing an illegitimate sentence.
