Ah crap! I wanna play! ... Meh... I can't until well after the 1st.
Are we gonna be hosting any new games on this thing? (FF maybe?) ...and if not, are we finally gonna get a map rotation on the TFC server?

FF = fortress forever, Thoth's preferred successor to TFC.

I really don't know what I can/can't run to be honest. I have to run a few tests first like how much faster a 2.5 ghz Harpertown core Xeon is over the ol' Athlon MP running at 1.67 ghz. Is it twice as fast? Three times as fast? I just don't know. Also, I don't know what the load of the HL2 engine is like especially when running different mods. I know for example, HLDS for HL1 was based around the 2.2 (VERY OLD) kernel libraries which ran like crap on newer distributions. So I'm guessing Valve updated the HLDS2 base code it runs "more better" (I like Idiocracy a little too much). There's a lot of factors involved that require testing.
If I had my way, I'd do the following:
-32 player TFC 2fort server
-18 player NS server
-1 NS-Combat server
-1 FF server
-1 TFC "conflict resolution" server (aka mulch all day)
-1 TFC map rotation server
I really really really do not like TF2. I tried and tried for many hours to like it but I honestly don't. I just can't over the fact that they REMOVED (most games ADD content) so much from TFC and added a pretty graphics engine with a few minor user interface tweaks. It makes me want to stab just thinking about it. Listening to the developer commentaries about how they did X and Y because "new players found Z to be too frustrating" just makes me lose my mind.
I'll run it if there's some neo-TF mod that makes it more TFC-like... I may just run it in the end however, to keep the TF community happy. Just because I don't like it and will never play it doesn't mean I shouldn't run it.
I should start a donations bin just for the TF2 server because then maybe I'll feel obligated to run it.
Anyways, my $0.02.
-FYI, the delivery date for the server is December 5th. Before it goes in however, I have to put a LOT of work into it so don't expect it to go up overnight. It will be installed sometime in December however.
"Lot of work":
-Setting up a source-based host OS where everything has to be compiled
-Tightening up the base OS and allowing nothing but a virtualization layer to be put on top of it
-Run the multiple VMs for the server's contributors
-Copy over all data from the old server and configure
-Import and test all databases, then applications that depend on them
-FTP, Mail, Web services, etc, etc.
-Move DNS over
-Start load testing with HLDS, HLDS2
-Rewrite tons of server maintenance scripts - log rotation, event notification paging, out-of-band management, etc.
Many many details were removed... it'll take time is all I'm sayin.
