Peeps are clickin' on em and getting viruses. Peeps are viewing the threads with pictures in them, which raises their referal count, meaning people are getting paid to spam us. So yeah, gotta do somethin, such as the list Batcula linked

If your concerns are viruses and referrals, I say we ban every account that READS the no-post "omg free pr0n" threads! I, personally, wouldn't mind to see quite a few of those chaps go away.

So we need to ask a couple questions... first, how are they getting around the CAPTCHA? I see three possibilities: human supervised learning algorithm, default algorithm (how many types of CAPTCHAs can PhpBB generate anyways?), and straight up human solving. Maybe the spammers belong to all 3 groups? The three groups correspond to the three major types of spammage, anyways (aside from the free porn hack).

If it's one of the first two and the CAPTCHA can be replaced, switch to an image identification CAPTCHA. No automated approach (outside academia, yet) can get around those without using the free porn hack.

If that's not viable and we are dealing with non-humans, some of the hacky solutions in the topic seem like they might work, but they could also be very easily added to a bot's capabilities - with the exception being the dynamic ones (like "Anti Bot Question").

The VIPcode one looks especially nice as a possible deterrent that would stop bots for certain and strongly discourage humans (and new people, YES, grump for the win!)

Of course, the simplest solution might be: new accounts can't start new threads until they post in an existing one (which helps solve the "omg cheater outside cheater thread"-fest anyways). No idea if such a mod exists or how hard it would be to write.
